[mslee's thoughts] Angel Eyes Episode 17 & 18 - The Outcome

A mixture of random short highlights of what happened in these two episodes [ 17 & 18] and more of my thoughts on the story.

I never saw this one coming. I never thought that the writer will go this way. Dr. Jae Beom passed away. I always thought that Jae Beom needed to stay alive because he is the one who will make Soo Wan and Dong Joo keep the relationship together.

But then I realized I was wrong. Jae Beom's death is a sad part of the story but at the same time it is the only way to make him feel that he paid his sin through death. He is gone and along with this Dong Joo will find it in his heart the ability to understand him and forgive. It may not come immediately and whole hearted but it will along with the pain of loosing him.

When Dong Joo asked him how Jae Beom looked at him as a son, he did not anticipate that Jae Beom would try to answer him by taking off his mask and with all his energy tried to sit up causing him to roll over and down on the floor. He alerted Dong Joo of the sound he made as Dong Joo was walking away outside. He turned around and hurried inside to see him lying on the floor. His immediate reaction was to help him get back on the hospital bed and maybe stabilized him but Jae Beom stopped him and pointed at the bureau at the side. Dong Joo opened it. The box of letters he gave Soo Wan and the i-pod were there. Jae Beom conveyed through his eyes about the i-pod. He pocketed it and turned to Jae Beom. He really needs to be saved but again Jae Beom just touched him at the face and said Soo Wan's name.

Too late, he passed away, even if Ji Woon and other hospital team were there with a device for reviving. It was hopeless and I think the scene just showed another parallelism. What Dong Joo felt when he could not do anything more is like what Jae Beom felt [after he realized his momentary weakness and mistake] when nothing he did could bring back Jung Hwa to life.

Soo Wan continues to blame herself when her father died, she fell into depression that caused her eyesight to be temporarily gone. A psychological problem, conversion disorder, that blocks her ability to see because of the guilt attached to her eyesight. Soo Wan is the one suffering and she could not get a hold of herself. No valid excuse and reason could stop her from depression. She is in her own world, punishing herself and pushing Dong Joo away.

But Dong Joo has been patient with her. He decided to stay with her at her house. They are living together but not together as a couple. Soo Wan is too stubborn  and doesn't needs help. Still Dong Joo stayed. I like his patience but I also know that sooner he would feel frustrated with her. But then I also know his love is big enough for the two of them to make it until she comes back to her old self, the loving Soo Wan.

Why is Soo Wan feeling this way? I think more than feeling sorry for Dong Joo and Jung Hwa, she is sorry for saying those last words to her father. Her hate at the time she uttered those words could no longer be unsaid and the painful part, even if she regretted it now, her father already heard them. Sad and painful at the same time. After all he is her father and she loves him but she hurt him with her words.

More than feeling a burden to Dong Joo and what she represent to him as the recipient of Jung Hwa's eyes, she is ashamed of the "truth" she knew about what her father did to his mother. All these are making her more depressed and angry at herself.

This weeks episodes wrapped up the loose ends around the accident and the reason why Jung Hwa died. Cha Min Soo and the detective have gathered evidences enough to point out towards Ji Woon. He was the one who reported about the hit and run which Min Soo heard through the recorded messages. Ji Woon also learned how his mother killed Jung Hwa and what she injected in her. Ji Woon suffered the agony of guilt and even if he wants to confess, his mother would not hear of it. But when things are about to blow up on them, Oh Young Ji hurriedly packed Ji Woon's things sending him abroad. To pacify his mother's hysterical mood, he told her he would go but in the end turned himself in, Min Soo facing him at the investigation room, Dong Joo at the other room, seeing and listening to what's unfolding before him.

An unbelievable truth that they never expected. But the twist is that Ji Woon confessed to killing Jung Hwa with the injection of tetrodotoxin, a lethal drug that causes death. Even if Ji Woon confessed, even if Dong Joo felt so angry, he could not believe that Ji Woon did it. With cuffed hands, Ji Woon surrendered but Oh Young Ji appeared, crying, confessing her crime.

A mother's love knows no bounds but Oh Young Ji's love for her son [although understandable in a mother's point of view] doing a crime like killing in cold blood will never be acceptable. What makes her unforgivable in my opinion is that she felt no remorse. She said to Ji Woon she would do the same thing again if circumstances repeat itself. And the thing that makes her friendship with Jae Beom useless and selfish is her thinking that Jae Beom would understand her if he had known the truth of her acts. Maybe she is right, her friend would understand her twisted mind, the way she made him believed that the sin was his alone, but I am not sure if forgiveness will follow soon. Besides, it is too presumptuous of her to get away with what she had done to a friend. There is a limit to how much harm one can do to friendship. And Oh Young Ji just caused Jae Beom his life.

She may be crying now inside the cell, but it is already too late. She was cornered that's why she was there. Ji Woon could have been punished that's why she was there. The good thing on Ji Woon, he apologized to Dong Joo sincerely which his mother did not. That's the difference. So, even if I see Ji Woon as another reason behind Jung Hwa's death, I can forgive him for his remorse and how he exposed the truth.

The ending of episode 18 is not looking good when it comes to reconciliation between Dong Joo and Soo Wan. Even if Soo Wan now knows the truth and even if Dong Joo sincerely forgives Jae Beom, Soo Wan is not ready to forgive herself.

I can understand her struggles and her stubborn mind. She needs to heal first and accept all that has happened around her. I love how the writer finally healed a part of Soo Wan when she dreamt of her father. A happy Jae Beom with little Soo Wan. A proud and loving father. That's Jae Beom to Soo Wan. The dream made Soo Wan realized that whatever she did wrong, whatever she said, even if she had hurt him, a father would understand and will always love his daughter. I guess Soo Wan found peace through that dream. And the reason she also found again her eyesight.

Why did she have to go away and leave Dong Joo even after all this?

I am not sure what the writer wants to convey but I am guessing right here. As I said, Soo Wan needs to heal, needs to find herself, her courage and maybe let the separation be the starting point of another chance at love. They need a clean slate, so to speak. She needs to love herself, accept herself and what she has with her... [a part of Jung Hwa] and from there, she will have her peace of mind.

This has been a long post from mslee1107 and I am not sure if I covered all my thoughts. There's a lot more I haven't discussed, like Teddy, Hye Joo and her infatuation to the ahjussi rescuer and how I feel towards the Chief of Police who would go any lengths to harm the detective just to cover the crime.

But I am stopping here already. I hope I have shared well and readers will understand my thoughts. I call this part of the story THE OUTCOME, because this is the part where the result of the past crime which surrounded all the characters was presented. The end result of the choices they made from the past.

Two more episodes and it's a wrap! No more tears, no more lumps in the chest, more romance please. I am glad I am looking forward to a happy ending. Please writernim, do not make a twist that will surprise me, except if it is a happy ending.

  1. Thanks MsLee! I've been following your blog throughout and you've done wonders at recapping this series. Thank you. It was a beautiful kind hearted drama and I am still having withdrawals from our beautiful couple. I wish we could have had more episodes and sweet moments with them but I guess 20 will have to do. I will surely miss them and keep repeating this drama for years. :) Thank you again for your hard work.
