[mslee's thoughts] Can We Love Review - Mixed Up Love Story Begins While Past Caught Up With The Present
Seriously, this drama is getting better and more complex each week. So many simultaneous events happenings I feel full every after episode. It is as if my time spent watching it raw/live via streaming and watching it again with sub are well worth it. The drama is bringing serious subjects which are seldom shown in TV for it's moral issues. At the same time, it is educational and can help viewers to see them in a new perspective. Of course, choices are still very much his/her own decision.
Episode 5 and 6 continue to show the problems surrounding mother and daughter Ji Hyun and Se Ra. Both have the same fate. Pregnant at the wrong time. In Ji Hyun's case, she thought Do Young abandoned her and she was left to deal with her "unwanted" pregnancy. Her choice that time was to give birth but left the child to her brother's care. Pretending nothing happened and continued with her life. While Se Ra in her young age, still in middle school also became pregnant and her boyfriend is nowhere to be contacted. She is so scared which is understandable considering she is not yet ready to have this kind of responsibility. She tried to hide it, tried to abort it but just in the nick of time decided to run away from the place. I know it's hard to be courageous in such time in that condition but personally, I am glad she changed her mind. Her only option is to tell Ji Hyun. Ji Hyun is already facing so much difficulties, finding the reasons why Do Young and her separated and Se Ra's new problem is so much to take in. As a mother you don't want to hear such news ever while your child is still in school. But what should she do? She knew how it was to be in her place.
I was surprised when Ji Hyun suggested to see a doctor for an abortion. Normally, a mother will not even consider it but in her case, I want to understand her thinking. Is she really protecting Se Ra or the family from shame? Concealing Se Ra's state to the family is a selfish act. I believe the father should know about it and as a family be supportive and show more love to Se Ra is most important at a time like this. But I will wait what will happen next after Se Ra run out on her mother. I think Se Ra has the sole and final decision to what she wants for the baby and the family must respect that. Seeing she has decided not to abort, then morally she choose the right decision.
Another twist of the drama that keeps me interested and hoping for a closure or maybe a continuation, whichever way it goes is the love story of Do Young and Ji Hyun. It seems that their past is catching up with their present situation. All pent up emotions are being laid open and as adults I love the way they can talk about what happened to them. The only concern is that Do Young if he will have his way would like to resume where they left off if given the chance. He really loves Ji Hyun. While Ji Hyun, I don't think she is entertaining any reconciliation or whatever with him. So far, what's important to her is her perception of perfect family. She might be crying for what could have been and her mistakes but I don't think she will risk everything she has now to bring up the past. But then, I think it is not as perfect a marriage as the story likes to show. Something must be wrong somewhere, besides the arrogant mother in law and problematic daughter. I want to know what the writer will come up with to make Ji Hyun find her happiness.
Mixed up love story begins at work. The kiss that happened between Director Oh and Jung Wan at the karaoke room was both surprising yet mutual and passionate. I think Jung Wan and Kyung Soo have this invisible tension between them since they met. It grows each day. It heightens every time he teases her in his adorable and irritating way. The satisfaction he gets when he annoys her camouflage the real electricity between them. Jung Wan might be longing for a kiss but that moment she initiated it, it was just an answer to what she has been feeling towards Kyung Soo. I was glad that after the shared kiss, he realized his attraction to her enough to confess his feelings the next time they met.
Then here is Sun Mi who decided to pursue Kyung Soo. She planned, she called, she texted, she invited to watch movie, she assumed too much of his undivided attention he gave her when they are together. Sun Mi has always been lucky with cornering Kyung Soo. Fortunate that time is on her side when he passed up drunk. Inside the hotel room where he was laid, unconsciously, she kissed him. When he tried to get up and lost balance again with her on the bed, next scene was he was sleeping, without clothes and she was coming from the bathroom wearing a robe only. Did something happened between them? Maybe. Both adult, even drunk I guess.
But what is important is what he felt after he woke up seeing her in the same room. He felt shocked. Absolutely not thrilled to see her and realized what just happened. He is regretting. Sun Mi is a liberated woman and in pursuit of happiness and hopefully marriage. She has zeroed her attention to Director Oh Kyung Soo. Whether he likes her or not, which he has immediately clear with her that he likes someone else, it doesn't matter to Sun Mi. What matter is that she be given the chance to get his attention. Of course, no man can say "no way, forget it!" A man is a man and will not intentionally hurt the feelings of the woman who just confesses to him. There are some ways to make her realize like avoiding her. But Sun Mi won't have it. She went to see him in the office and with Jung Wan and Park Seung Ryong they went for a meal.
The love story is getting complicated when it has just started for Kyung Soo and Jung Wa. Still unaware of Sun Mi getting interested towards him, I wonder what will Jung Wan do if she finds out. What Jung Wan and Kyung Soo have is so fragile, only glimpse of hope to be mutually happy at the moment. I don't think Sun Mi will back out even if she finds out about them.
I felt sad once again for Yoon Seok. He waited for Sun Mi but when she did not come home, he knew she slept out with the director. She broke his heart totally this time. Just after using him when there's no one she can turn to, and even playing dog sitter when she has no one to take the dog to. Sun Mi's fault is that she is selfish to think that even though she keeps saying to Yoon Seok that there's no future for them, she should have drawn the line between them firmly. No sleeping together when she feels lonely. Not while her eyes are looking at Kyung Soo and determined to get his affection.
The story is so real I am loving the twist. Kinda irritated though with Sun Mi at the moment but I know I would want her to be happy too.
Until next episode.
