[mslee's thoughts] Misaeng Episode 5 Screen caps Review - Doing The Right Thing

This episode is the start of the real work of the interns who made it to the company. They are now called newbies or trainees. The irony of the situation for the four who passed the presentation like Jang Geu Rae, An Young Yi, Jang Baek Ki and the slacker who stole my sympathy and earned my like Han Suk Yool seriously put Gue Rae at an advantage over them who called themselves elite.

Geu Rae who only has GED in his resume retained his position in Sales Team 3 despite Mr. Oh being in denial that he is happy to see him again. Young Yi who has a great potential was assigned to Resource team who composed of male chauvinistic bosses and made her run errands instead of using her skills and inputs. Baek Ki who thought he is one of the brightest trainee in the group was teamed up with a superior who does not like to delegate work and do all himself, leaving him nothing to do. Then Suk Yool who is comfortable in the field became agitated and nervous with office works.

Certainly, Geu Rae has been the lucky one despite being scolded often by Mr. Oh who has a temper but I think deep inside, it is his way of teaching him the works.

The highlights of this episode is about the B/L [Bill Of Lading] that was not included in the documents to be signed by Mr. Ma.

What is B/L?

I look it up at the internet to make me understand what type of document it is.

It is a legal document between a shipper of a particular good and the carrier detailing the type, quantity and destination of the good being carried. It also serves as a receipt of the shipment to be signed.

Anyway, the person in charge of this document was so scared of being scolded by Mr. Ma and just stood firmly by his alibi that Mr. Oh from Sales team 3 did not include the original copy. But the truth was, the missing document was in a file inside a cabinet in the Resource cubicle. He let the burden to be passed on Mr. Oh. The chaos started between Mr. Ma, Resource team and Sales Team 3.

When Baek Ki was still an intern there, he saw the document but remained silent about it even if there are already arguments around him and someone will have to take full responsibility about it. Young Yi has her doubt because she thought Mr. Oh would not be that angry if it was really his fault. Gue Rae asked Young Yi about it. Baek Ki told Young Yi not to intervene because it is not their responsibility and that she might be in the middle of it considering she is from resource team.

The moral value of this episode is that Young Yi despite her hardships from her own team could not simply ignore the truth when she found the document inside the cabinet. She asked Sun Ji Young, one of the female superior in the company what to do if she knew something that is not true and it keeps bothering her.  In the end it is her choice, really. To stay silent but the consequences is that her conscience will bother her and it won't be forgotten. Or to help reveal the truth.

She told Geu Rae about the document and gave him the combination of the lock. While searching for the file, Geu Rae was found out by the man who made the whole mess. But Mr. Oh was there, already holding the "missing" B/L.

In the end, the man who was really responsible for the B/L by lying that it was not in his possession wrote an apology. Resource team felt betrayed by Young Yi. Maybe what she did is wrong in the eyes of her colleagues considering it is her team, by not siding with them, still doing the right thing is the most dignified way of working.

Baek Ki looked at Young Yi. I want to understand this young man. He might be scared of getting the burnt of angers if he spilled the truth but then it only showed how callous he can be by not having any sympathy to anyone who might be mistakenly accused of mistakes when he himself all along knows the truth.

This episode showed why Geu Rae differ from him and Young Yi. He is not afraid to help even if it is not asked of him. He is concerned for the welfare of his superior.
