[mslee's thoughts] The Greatest Marriage Episode 5 - Cha Gi Young Standing Firm About Her Pregnancy

Short Recap

Announcing that she had a sperm donor from a sperm bank made headlines and topped all news on line search. Reporters hound Cha Gi Young everywhere she went, even camping outside the hospital where she was spotted. The network was in chaos, her announcement was really unexpected and the directors want her fired immediately. Jo Eun Cha was also pissed by what she had done. He knew it was a blatant lie and he promised the President that he would make her leave the station. But she was not the ordinary woman they thought she was. She is strong and defended her spot as the 9 o'clock news anchor even though Jo Eun Cha already readied another woman anchor to replace her. The staff were all aghast at her audacity to not bulge at her place even if they tried to dragged her out, Hyun Myung Mi got her chair, almost making her thumped her bottom to the floor. So bad for a pregnant woman, still she did not bulge. They had no other resort but to let her deliver the news along with Jo Eun Cha. 

Park Tae Yeon's parents saw the press conference and was confused about her pregnancy. But Tae Yeon denied it just as Gi Young wanted him to. Even his sister Park Sun Nyeo did not believe that he is the father because of the captured photos of her carried by Jo Eun Cha to the hospital.

Gi Young's mother was devastated. She went to Seoul, and let her know about her disappointment with her. She wants her to abort the baby. She is too embarrassed to show her face to their neighborhood. She believed she has to be married first before having a baby. But Gi Young is firm in her decision, even sleeping at her friend's house Na Yeon Hee to avoid her mother waiting for her at her apartment for next day's appointment in a hospital.

The book was launched despite her  not confirming her presence. She went to the launch and signed autographs. Park Tae Yeon also appeared. Then Jo Eun Cha was there, with a plan to finally oust Gi Young as the news anchor. He had gotten a list of her phone conversation with the mysterious father of her daughter who is Park Tae Yeon. With the book, he opened it for her to sign only to see the attached document inside. Jo Eun Cha has finally made her anxious. It is either she signed it knowing she has no other option but to give up or to provoke Eun Cha to leak the secret.

Some thoughts.

First I will just be as neutral as possible regarding this episode. I think that Gi Young's announcement really hurt the news management and was done selfishly. I believe there is ethical issues around it. And if I will see it from the management's point of view, what she did is really not proper. She should have consulted with her superiors regarding her condition first and tried to compromise with them to keep her job. And if in the end she would feel that they are being unfair to her, then I think that is the time to bring it out to the public.

However, I think being  stubborn as she is, on her part it is her only resort. In her shoes, I think she has showed that being a single mother is not something to be ashamed of. Personally, I honor and give high regard for the institution of marriage just like anyone. I would prefer it before giving birth to a child. But then, this is modern times and not all marriages are perfect or something that anyone can have. Even being a single mother just like Gi Young under her circumstances is much preferable than opting for a marriage that will surely go bad having in laws like Park Tae Yeon's and their conservative lifestyles which is so different to Gi Young. I think she may have liked Park Tae Yeon but she was not in love with him. He came to her in the right time when having a child is a blessing in her age. 

I like that even though the whole world is judging her, she is firm in her decision to protect the child. While her mother may be disappointed in her, it is expected of a mother to feel that way. No mother would want to see her child to be in a ;position like Gi Young. Every parent wants the best for their children. And sometimes, having a proper marriage is a stable relationship a parent could hoped for. But then I don't understand why she would insist on aborting the child when she already see how strong Gi Young is as a woman. And besides it is her own choice. But then, I think embarrassment of being the center of rumors and gossips especially in your neighborhood is a big factor that a simple mother like Gi Young's mom will have a hard time coping up.

Then what about Jo Eun Cha? He is acting what is expected of him. He has been trying to find ways to oust Gi Young the first day he came back as an anchor. He knew about the pregnancy first. He decided to stay mum about it hoping that it will blow soon enough. He is messing with her scripts, trying to outshine her while reporting. But then, her decision to announced her pregnancy publicly should be a jubilant feeling for him so I am not understanding why he is pissed abut it. It is her's alone and her problem. Although he is doing what will benefit for him, he can not also really abandon her. When everyone tried to make her leave the station minutes before the news aired, he somehow stepped in and asked the President to allow her just once more. Maybe he really did know her and her strength. 

While it is clearly a blackmail move showing Gi Young his hidden card, the mobile conversations of her and Park Tae Yeon, it is the only thing Jo Eun Cha can do in the circumstances. He needed to win against her. He sees her as her foe in their line of career. He knows she is good in her job. Even after the press con, the ratings are high. 

Regarding Hyun Myung Mi, she is being sneaky and vindictive. Well I am not really surprised because that is really her character even from the beginning. She is a sort of opportunist. But I want to think that because she really liked Park Taae Yeon that's why when she knew about their relationship and about the baby, jealousy took over her.Her actions is that of a woman hurt and dumped. But then she is too much after when she was asked to bring back the chair for Gi Young, she did not and stormed off from the station.

As a viewer, I would want her to end up with Tae Yeon. Maybe I would like her to stand up against his parents as well and see how far she can endure. She also has a different vibe, an aura that is sneaky. 

The drama is getting interesting each episode and just when the episode ending is so good, we have to wait another week to see the next one. Ugh!!! Chincha! The development is fast and good. I am waiting for more of Gi Young's hardships and how she will be able to overcome all of them. From what's preview, she will be forced to resign but then the ratings will drop. I think that's when she will be recalled and that will surely be an interesting turn of events for her and for Jo Eun Cha.
